P1 may see results recovery earlier than expected

KUCHING: Green Packet Bhd (Green Packet) via its subsidiary Packet One Networks Malaysia Sdn Bhd (P1), is expected to see its results returning to the black earlier than expected, given a stronger subscriber base due to growing interest in the wireless broadband segment.

Currently, the country’s largest WiMAX (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) operator has a 20 per cent share of customers from the wireless broadband segment from its total subscriber base.

Further, it is slated towards securing a bigger share of the segment from its recently-launched WiMAX embedded notebooks (WENB).

At a recent promotion event held by P1 at Berjaya Times Square, researchers from OSK Research Sdn Bhd (OSK Research) observed laptops of fered were actually purchased from vendors at a slight discount to their retail price range from RM1,349 (for the netbooks) to RM2,499 (notebooks).

Cumulatively, however, such subsidies would only cost the company some RM55,000 for 50 laptops, a far cry from its annual advertising and promotional budget of RM10 million to RM15 million.

GPacket to buy more P1i shares

Green Packet Bhd is proposing to subscribe to an additional 699,991 shares in Packet One International Pte Ltd (P1i), a 90% subsidiary of Green Packet, for RM1.68mil.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Green Packet said P1i had also issued 200,000 shares and 99,999 shares fully paid to Telnet Technologies Sdn Bhd and Tang Pen San.

Green Packet: Losses due to investments in WiMAX

PETALING JAYA: Green Packet Bhd saw a net loss of RM55 million for the year ended Dec 31, 2008 (FY08), from a net profit of RM30.2 million a year earlier due to its investments in its wimax business, its managing director and chief executive Puan Chan Cheong said.

Speaking to reporters in a media briefing here yesterday, he said the company would incur total capital expenditure (capex) of RM1 billion over a four-year period beginning last year to establish its place as a WiMAX service provider. Puan said that the investments, which will be a major contributor in the future, would start to see results in the current financial year ending December this year.
