Qualcomm and Asiaspace WiMAX Sdn Bhd Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Explore Future Deployment of LTE TDD Technology

HONG KONG – September 27, 2010 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) ), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies, products and services, and Asiaspace wimax Sdn Bhd today announced that they have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore future deployment of Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex (LTE TDD) technology in Malaysia.

Asiaspace currently owns a license to provide wireless technology services on the 2.3 GHz band in Malaysia. With this license, Asiaspace intends to explore the deployment, in the near future, of LTE TDD technology, which is a reflection of the commercial advantages service providers can capitalize on as they become part of the 3G wireless ecosystem of more than one billion mobile subscribers worldwide. According to the Global mobile Suppliers Association, 80 operators have committed to launch LTE in 33 countries as of June 2010, which demonstrates a continued commitment to providing innovative devices and services for the consumer.

“Asiaspace looks forward to working with Qualcomm in examining the technological and commercial opportunities presented by LTE TDD,” said Datuk Abdul Ghani Bin Abdullah. “Our vision is to offer the best wireless experience to the customer – regardless of the type of technology. We believe that LTE TDD technology will best serve the highly vibrant and mobile society Malaysia represents by allowing us to stay within the boundaries of mainstream wireless technologies and interoperate with 3G and 2G networks. As a business, Asiaspace will be able to enjoy the cost benefits of scale and tap into the massive subscriber base that already exists within the cellular mobile world.”

“Qualcomm is pleased to be in discussions with Asiaspace to explore the deployment of a LTE TDD network in Malaysia,” said John Stefanac, president of Southeast Asia & Pacific for Qualcomm. “Spectrum is a scarce resource around the world, forcing service providers to deploy wireless technologies that not only provide high-speed connectivity and access, but also ones that are interoperable with all the 3G standards that are currently thriving. We are delighted Asiaspace is interested in LTE TDD, as it provides a fully mobile wireless experience for the consumer, backed up by ubiquitous 3G coverage.”

SK Telecom Takes Stake in WiMax Operator

Korean carrier SK Telecom (Nasdaq: SKM) is to invest US$100 million for a 25 percent stake in Malaysian wimax operator Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. (P1) as part of its plan to build a portfolio of wireless broadband service and ICT (information and communication technology) assets in Southeast Asia. (See SK Telecom Invests in P1 and SKT Plans $2.2B Spending Spree.)

P1 is one of a number of dedicated WiMax startups looking to capitalize on the demand for affordable broadband Internet access in developing markets where fixed-line access is limited. It has signed up more than 175,000 business and residential customers since its launch in late 2008 and claims to have generated revenues of nearly $44 million in 2009. (See ITU Day 2: WiMax Brings It.)

The operator recently announced a network expansion plan that will see it reach 65 percent of Malaysians by 2012, from around 45 percent this year, and plans to introduce WiMax-enabled laptop computers during 2010 to boost its market penetration. SK Telecom is attracted by the growth potential in Malaysia, a country of about 30 million people where mobile penetration is high (above 100 percent) but broadband penetration currently stands at about 33 percent. WiMax is regarded as the technology that can break the broadband hold of the incumbent carrier, Telekom Malaysia Berhad . (See Telekom Malaysia Faces WiMax Challenge.)

SK Telecom’s wireless broadband strategy isn’t limited to WiMax, though: The carrier was the first to launch an HSPA+ service in South Korea, plans to support Long Term Evolution (LTE), and has built out a network based on WiBro technology (Korea’s version of mobile WiMax) in its domestic market. SK Telecom’s investment, which values P1 at $400 million, comes at a tricky time for the WiMax community, as service providers, vendors, and analysts try to figure out the technology’s role in an LTE world. (See Yota: WiMax + LTE for Russia.)

George Town To Have WiMAX By Mid-year

PENANG, Jan 19 (Bernama) — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Monday hoped that the infrastructure for wireless Internet surfing through wimax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) in the whole of George Town could be installed by the middle of this year.

“This is the start of realising the dream of wireless Internet surfing in the whole state, and the desire to make Penang the first state to use the service,” he said, adding that the service would not be costlier than existing broadband services but three times faster.

For a start, seven locations on the island would be equipped with the infrastructure and seven more six months later, he told reporters after launching a test drive of wireless Internet surfing through WiMAX with the collaboration of Packet One (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (P1), here.

“In all, 28 locations will be served in the next 18 months, covering at least 70 per cent of the locations on the island and Seberang Perai,” he said.

Lim said it was hoped that WiMAX would help narrow the digital divide between people in the urban and rural areas in the state.

In September last year, the state government and P1 signed a joint-venture agreement for the installation of WiMAX infrastructure in the state under the Wireless@Penang initiative, and the first phase of the project was launched in October.
